Re: First Litter - Questions

I didn't pull mine to hand-feed them, as I wasn't going to adopt them out and didn't need to have them on formula for the new HOFs to use as part of the bonding experience. However, I did start handling them regularly to tame them. I did peek in on mine before two weeks because my Penny was unusuall...

Joan, exactly. Based on her hormonal behavior when she went into estrus (I got scratched and bitten GOOD), I've been very surprised she's been so relaxed and calm as a mother.

Re: Penny & Otis proudly announce...

OK, for these next pics, I have a huge disclaimer/warning . I DO NOT recommend doing this with your mama flyer, unless you are VERY SURE she's UNUSUALLY calm and tame. I should say also that I'm a high school teacher, and when I adopted Penny in Oct. 2008, I would bring her to work with me several t...

Re: Penny & Otis proudly announce...

The babies turned 2 weeks old yesterday. :) Here's Penny with the babies. She was so relaxed that she was grooming her face while I pet her, even though I had just gotten her and the babies out of their nest box. Talk about relaxed! (Yes, I know how extremely unusual her behavior is--I had actually ...

violetlady,

I am in deep south Texas--Rio Grande Valley, Hidalgo County. I'm practically in Mexico way down at the very tippy tip.

The babies are doing very well. Penny is being very good. She takes good care of them as well as herself.

Judy, she's such a sweetheart and always has been. She & I are very closely bonded. I remember when I was first in contact with you to adopt her--you told me she'd make a particularly good "pet," and you were right. I don't expect her to keep being that patient with me, though. Going t...

Do not give salted.

The salt could form crystals in her urinary tract, which could lead to blood in the urine, etc., as welll as other health issues.

The Nut 'n Berry is basically a wild bird food, and is sprayed with vitamins intended for birds. Since we have no idea what vitamins are on them, and since they are not formulated for mammals, I have just stoped feeding it. I do still give in-shell nuts, and they still get pieces of pecans, etc, as...

Re: Sweet Potato Question

4Skwerlz just made this post on TBS to clarify what the problem is. It's not that sweet potatoes are bad for squirrels. They're just as healthy for squirrels as they are for humans; we're just feeding too much of them. This isn't about extrapolating between species; but about comparative body sizes....
