While I haven't visited the forum in some time, I'm still enjoying being an HOF! Ziggy still rules the roost & is now 1 yr. old & doing well. His family jewels have not yet dropped, & thats just fine with me. =D> Hope all is well with you folks. I'm much busier now as care giver ...

Re: Newborn flyers in a bluebird box...alone.

I'm not qualified to answer all of your questions, but I see that you posted last night & I do believe these babies need to be fed quickly. Our flyer, Ziggy, was rescued from a bluebird box last fall. Mamma should be with the babies during the day. I suspect she was likely killed Thursday night...

Re: Looking for Baby Southern Flying Squirrel on the Eastcoast

It appears that you only have the 1 big door in front, you may want to consider adding a smaller door somewhere for feeding. There will likely be times that you may need to add food & or water without letting your furball out. Very neat construction job!

Re: Looking for Baby Southern Flying Squirrel on the Eastcoast

There are some hobby breeders in Fl.. Of those on this forum, I don't believe any will ship anyway. There are also those who rescue native SFS & offer them for adoption once they are stabilized. I don't think anyone knows all there is to know about them, not even the "pros" on this fo...

Try baiting it with his favorite nut/treat. I've read comments on the forum that say some flyers never take to a wheel. We saw Ziggy riding his after about 10 days or so, but truth is, he may have started sooner while we were sleeping.

Day Lily buds

I'm sure other members already know this, but I didn't until recently. A flyer friend told me her 2 loved the buds. She feeds those buds that are due to open the next day, so thats what I gave Ziggy. I have no hybrid varieties, & have only fed the native orange ones that have volunteered in our...

Re: Finally a pregnant flyer out of a pack of six! Now what?

I don't know about flyers, but I know in other mammal females, sometimes the nipples will distend during estrus without being fertilized. I don't think this is necessarily an indicator of a false pregnancy, but that does also happen. Hopefully one of the admins will come along soon with better info.

You didn't say how old your flyer is, but I'm learning from our Ziggy that "maturity" takes a lot longer than I would have thought. We rescued Ziggy last fall as a nestling. Early on he pooed & peed on us fairly frequently, but as he gets older it happens much less. I use to dig him o...

I assume you are absolutely sure he is in the wall? Also, is he weaned or still on formula feedings? They can smell really well, so put pecans, peanut butter on bread or crackers, a grape, etc.. Some flyers seem to like peanut butter & it has a strong smell. Put a dish of water near the opening...

I would think the best first step would be to place his favorite food near the opening. I know how panicked you feel! A while back Ziggy tarted behind the back top of my gas stove. I was horrified, but was able to coax him out fairly quickly. Hopefully by now, your baby is safely back in his cage!!!

Be sure to use fleece for the fabric projects, cloth that ravels can be harmful. The threads can become entangled in their wee feet, toes & legs. There is a post on this forum that offers easy to follow instructions for no-sew projects using fleece.

The pet nurser nipples may be a wee bit too big, but worth a try. WalMart here sells them with the esbilac formula, or check pet shops in your area. You can also use a 2cc syringe (hypodermic without the needle), not the lurloc (sp.?) type, the ones with a little tip protruding (can't remember want...

Hardwire cloth will probably be the easiest wire to find. I prefer 1/2" x 1" welded wire, but it can be hard to find. Both welded wire & hardware cloth are produced in various widths & sold by the ft. or by the roll. I've seen rolls of both sold in 25' 50' or 100'. The reason I pr...

I would begin by reducing his formula by one feeding at a time & at the same time introduce solids. Try plain cheerios, nuts like pecans, almonds, etc. shelled. Later you can offer them with the shell cracked, & eventually whole nuts in the shell. Also try a wee bit of applesauce (no sugar ...

Travis, until the weather improves enough for an outdoor scrubbing, try mixing some baking soda in warm water & use it to wipe down the wire on both sides. BS is a good deoderizer/cleaner & its safe/non-toxic.
