Re: Hello from a Wild Southern Flying Squirrel lover!

Wow, that is amazing! I am so jealous! You need to post pictures :-)

The SFS's range does extend up to where I am, but they are very few and far between. We have mostly Northerns, but they tend to be shier.

Go on to "The Squirrel Board" (different squirrel forum), and look up the user "Skul". He and his wife are in Texas, and they have a lot of flyers. They are a great source!

From what I understand, it can happen, but it's more difficult. You'll just have to put in the time and see what happens!

Yes, you should put some mesh on the inside, so that the flyer can climb it more easily. If it was previously used for birds, be sure to clean it out very well, as bird feces can carry harmful bacteria. Also, you should check to see if it is legal for you to own a flyer in your country. Good luck!

Hi! Japanese flyers are a protected species, so that is why you don't see anyone in the US with one. Too bad! :( If you go on "thesquirrelboard.com" and make an account in the forum, you should contact the person with the user name "Skul" - he and his wife are flyer experts in Te...

They are very small so they don't each very much, so this means what you do feed them is important. I daily feed mine a small assortment of fruits and vegetables in a small hamster sized food bow, along with a small piece of chicken or egg for protein. She also gets one Henry's Healthy Block a day (...

Omigosh, my Momo was a terror earlier in the spring for a month. Lots of biting and war-dancing. Luckily she has since calmed down. They are little fur-sharks in heat.

I also like to try the classic child rearing "diversion" tactic - if they are chewing on something bad, give them something good (branch, nut, etc.) to chew on instead, when you catch them doing it.

From what I understand, they are endangered, so there isn't much chance that they could be imported. Too bad because they are cuties! You should just stick with the normal SFS - they are plenty of fun ;-)

Massive Aggression Issues

Starting about a month ago, Momo has been suddenly extremely aggressive. She is becoming a hand attacker - she inexplicably will pounce on my or my fiance's hand and will bite hard like crazy. Re: Need Exercise Wheel Advice

Absolutely get the Stealth Wheel! It is the best one. Anything that has a bar across the front of it (like the one that you have now) can be very dangerous, as you have noted. Squirrels have broken their backs on those. I'd suggest that you remove it immediately from the cage, if you haven't done so...

Re: Help with taming my Southern Flying Squirrel

I'm not sure about the aggression - I know that sometimes they will just bond mostly with one person, and not be friendly with anyone else. Perhaps that is the case here? As far as their little claws, that is just part of being a HOF (human owned by a flyer) - they need to have some claw at least to...

Help! I think Momo has some sort of UTI - what can we do to help her? I have...

I'd listen to Joan more than me - she has more experience. I actually don't feed waxworms to my girl because 1) she doesn't like them and 2) it skeeves me out (I'm bad, I know!) As far as the seed mixture, I think people mostly warn against it just so that newbies don't think that it's the only thin...

Yes, waxworms are a great protein source! Other ones are chicken and cooked eggs (my Momo loves grilled chicken and dehydrated chicken and scrambled eggs) - I also feed her Greek yogurt, which has a higher protein content. I think those are pretty much the main ones!

I think it could be possible.... also if that coconut shell is the only nest box she has, IMO you need to build her an additional, bigger nest box. I think the coconut shell is too small. Also, do you have several nest pouches available for her, so that she can have alternate beds if she wants?
