Re: Lacquer safe?

So, I guess no one knows if the lacquer would be bad for flyers to be around? I think I will try putting one of the gourd nests in the cage to see how they react. There is no longer a strong odor. If they don't like it, I'll take it out of the cage.

Lacquer safe?

I feel really silly about this. I remember that shellac is safe for coating nestboxes, but when I went to buy some I bought lacquer instead. I used it to coat some birdhouse gourds (outside only) and a cedar birdhouse (inside and out). Do ya'll think it will be safe for the flyers once it has dried?...

Thank you, Peep, for sharing. I knew this had happened to others. It was even more of a shock since Dixie's mother, Pearl, had two litters of pups and took wonderful care of them. I just took it for granted but now know what a blessing it is when everything goes the way God intended. Dixie is back t...

I'm sorry to have to say that Dixie ate the other pup last night. I saw that she had moved back to the other nestbox, so checked the one the baby was in and found what remained of it. Help with newborn

When I was able to peek at Dixie's newborn pups I found she had eaten one. Should I take the other one and try to raise it? I have Esbilac and syringes. Please advise me ASAP.

I wish now that I had waited a little longer to announce the new arrivals. Dixie went back to the other nest box, and I peeked in to see the babies. Dixie has pups!

I was sure that Dixie was expecting because of her growing girth since she and Houdini got together inside the recliner a while back. Her cage is in the master bathroom, and when I went in there this morning she was running around with a squeeking pinkie in her mouth! She kept coming out of her nest...

I use kleenex holders from Hobby Lobby. They are unfinished wood, have a slide off bottom, and a flyer sized hole in the top. They are made to hold the small kleenex boxes. Just lay them on their side and you've got a perfectly good nest box. They only cost 2 or 3 dollars, too!

As far as the odor question; it doesn't seem to be a problem in general. There are some cases when the odor may be stronger than usual, but with regular cage cleaning most people don't notice anything. Some baking soda sprinkled in the catch tray under the cage is one way to combat odor.

Lately along with the nut hiding, my flyers all seem to want to trade cages. Pearl is the most into this; she has switched back and forth a couple times. She also goes into the other cages and steals nuts to hide all over the house. Anyone else having this happen?

Yes, Mary, they all seem to have that urge to store nuts this time of year, some more than others. Pearl, who is about 1 1/2 years is very serious about hiding nuts. Our others, who are younger, do some stashing but don't seem as serious about it.
