Hey Patti! I just PMed you some info. Please go check it out and let me know if you have any questions. I'd also listen to Joan - she knows what she's talking about :) It's great to have access to good advice from longtime HOF's... thank God for the internet!! Good luck with your flyer and please po...

Re: Possible MBD and a broken heart

I've been posting this info on TSB for you so I'll let you know if anyone says anything :) Once Joan gets on, I'm sure she'll have more suggestions. I believe there is a vet associated with NFSA who does (inexpensive) necropsies to determine the cause of death. I know it's a rough thing to ask, but ...

Re: Possible MBD and a broken heart

Hi Patti! First off, I'd suggest that you post over at The Squirrel Board as well - there is a different set of rehabbers that check that board and you may get extra suggestions and fast help there as well. Honestly, I'm not sure if MBD is what was going on. Have you taken the surviving flyer to the...

Hi NativePrincess!! That's great to hear! Keep up the good work. I'm so glad things are getting better. I actually thought of you today! It's kind of a funny story... so yesterday I got face-jumped and didn't blink in time - so Momo accidentally scratched my eye (ow, yeah. She got cage time for that...

Thanks guys! I was feeling really worried (like, "what did I do to my baby!!??") so it really helps to have feedback from other people. It makes me feel better. My fiance will get to work on widening the nest box hole this weekend. I hope that helps! Overall, Momo seems to be acting quite ...

Re: Reintroduction/Re-bonding with flyer

Haha! Luckily I had her since she was a baby, so I was able to instill good habits early. We kept a small water bottle nearby when she was out, so if she bit, she would get a firm "no" and a spray. She learned within a few weeks what was a hard bite and what was a soft nip that would not h...

Re: Reintroduction/Re-bonding with flyer

You may want to alter how you act around Skittles too - he might see your incoming hand as a threat or predator and attack on instinct. Even my squirrel, when she's alert, doesn't like to have hands coming towards her fast (we have her trained to not bite hard, so it's not a problem though. But she ...

Bald spot on Momo's leg/armpit!?

Just yesterday, I noticed a bald spot on Momo's front right leg (under the leg, what you would call her 'armpit' area). I feel terrible Please see below for a pic. I figure it is either one of two things: 1) Self mutilation/overgrooming (the only thing I would think that would say it's not this is t...

Re: Fishy pee???

A lot of people have the misconception that they require mostly seeds/nuts for a healthy diet - so you're not alone! The varied diet that flyers require is part of what makes them a 'specialty' pet. Don't worry, sounds like they are young and if you start feeding them the proper diet, they will be j...

Re: Fishy pee???

For one, if they are still on formula, see if you can switch to Fox Valley (if you are using Esbilac, that is no longer recommended, due to formula change) Pecans and mixed seeds should be given as treats only - they need a diet of mixed vegetables, protein, and fruit daily, once they get on an adul...

Hi Midvale and welcome! To answer your first question, can you post more information as to what you are feeding them? Knowing more about their diet will help. I'm so sorry - that is a very common cause of death among flyers (you aren't the first, and won't be the last I'm sure). I don't know about what you can do, emotionally, for your other flyer, but I strongly recommend you install a toilet ladder as soon as possible : http://thesquirrelboard.com/forum...

Re: Bloated, Gastritis?

Yep you are right that there is a lot of conflicting ideas out there! Since flyers are pretty unknown as far as biological studies go, we are pretty much stuck with what we know about humans or other rodents, and applying that to flyers until we either have a mistake or success. Since you study this...

Re: Bloated, Gastritis?

Due to the way it is produced, it is inherently different than other sweeteners. While it is very good for adult humans (I love it and eat it all the time!) it can be dangerous for those with weakened immune systems. I would expand this too small animals as well, such as flyers, that cannot tolerate...

I believe it is the same reason you should not give honey to young children and infants (these warnings appear on honey bottles). Better to be safe than sorry!

There is a lot of good info on here for potty training your squirrels - and first off, congrats on your new baby! For me, what has worked really well is positive reinforcement. When she pees/poops on her cage down low, I go "good girl!" in a positive tone, and feed her a treat afterwards (...

Question on chewing habits

Momo is provided with plenty of wood chews and twigs in her cage, but she has shown no interest in chewing any of them. In fact, she normally just throws them all on the floor of her cage and ignores them. Should I be concerned that she's not chewing enough? She gets a normal seed mix, and she will ...
