Re: Rest in peace Beacon

I have follow much of Beacon's life here. I know how you feel ... just as I do about Chuck. It's exceptional that they lived as long as they did and grew to have diseases of old age. Given they are lucky to make 5 years in the wild, I'd say our boys got many extra years of love. :angel13:

="Sreisig1"... Also, do you still recommend just getting 1 squirrel so it bonds properly, and then add another a year later if need be?

Yes as two will bond to each other. My second one bonded to Chuck more than me, but he remained strongly bonded to me. I got the second a year later.

Re: Nut n' Berry or Henry's Healthy Blocks

I used rat or Macaw food as a basic with fresh food daily. Chuck also like a woodpecker block I got at Walmart. Make sure you check the ingredients for supplements so you are bot adding them if they already exist. I quite additional supplements years ago and Chuck lived to 15.

It's good to get this feedback and it was smart to remove the wheel as it gave her a rest that a smaller cage would. Their ability to heal is amazing. Even broken legs or amputated ones don't slow them down once they are healed. :multi:

I believe the cause of the bald spots were the multi-vitamons I gave him. It has not occurred since I stopped giving them to him. For your information it was "vita-sol" multivitamins for hamsters and gerbils... The high potency 8 in 1. This is good to know. I quit giving vitamins to Chuck...

Re: Question about Balance and Gliding

Sometimes they do miss the mark. This can be painful for the HOF if you get a face landing. Changes in weight can also effect this. When Mishi was pregnant, she always missed her mark and landed lower that expected. I'Ve noticed that Chuck's jump are a bit off target as he's aged. He's now 14.

Re: New Squirrel won't come out.

He has to be eating and drinking or he would not be aline after 2 weeks. Even an adult flyer can learn to trust, but may never bond like a pup would. Give him time and be very patient. Read about bonding with an older flyer: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=205

Bot Fly Warning

If your flyer ever gets a bot fly larva, get it to a vet for removal. Trying to remove the worm yourself can cause it to repture which is NOT good. In the wild, bot larva eventually emerge from gray squirrels, but leave large, open wounds. In flyers, this can be fatal.

Just don't try to pull off any cotton balls as one HOF tried. LOL The testicles are not descended year around, but if he's "scrotal", you can't miss it.

Flyers are considered adult at 12 weeks although many males cannot breed until a year or more. If his testicles are descended, he's of breeding age. Skirkpatrick74's advice about patience is correct ... it takes time.

73 grams is 2.57 ounces. Adult flyers in the wild weigh 2-4 oz with 4 being really big.

Shelves around the walls might be an answer. Hole can be jig sawed to hold food bowls. Nest boxes can also be placed there. Shevles can also be a place for paper towels once they establish a "potty" place.
