New Source for Pinenuts

Postby Avalon » Sun Oct 22, 2006 7:23 pm

Amazon.com no longer has the pinenuts. The last source I used was

http://www.squirrelstore.com/ $7.95 for 1 pound

This place cost a little more for a 1lb bag, but it has cheaper bulk packages: $8.48 for 1 pound

Pine nuts are supose to have a buttery taste that they love. You can also buy shelled pine nuts reasonably priced at most groceries. Mine like them both ways.

I have only bought the shelled kind in the grocery store. I keep them in a small jar in the fridge. The furballs love them. After a couple of months I buy fresh ones and toss the remainder of the older ones into a salad for us.

That's probably what I'll do as well. I just have two teetiny babies so I can't imagine them eating a pound of them in a life time, but I'm sure they could...LOL

I have five not so teeny babies! And I still don't go through enough shelled pine nuts to use up the 8 ounce packages I buy at Walmart.
They are just used as treats here. I have not checked on the nutritional content of them, so I have not used them as part of their daily diet.

Besides, it's always a good idea to have several food treat items in your arsenal of bribery bait when you need to get a flyer back into it's cage  Sometimes when I try to lure one from the curtains with a pecan half, he/she will just scramble around in the folds of the curtain and come back to the top with a stashed pecan piece and eat it in front of me while snickering :evilbat:

That's when I come back with the sure fire bait. Usually each squirrel has one or two of these items that they just can't help themselves and give in to.
Molly - Jordan Almond
Tom Tom - butter
Munchkin - a moth
m'Deah - pine nut or buttered toast
Tiny tim - will come down to me for almost anything, but he always gets a reward anyway :)

New Source for pine nuts

Postby Lora » Mon Apr 02, 2007 7:47 pm

I have a 1 lb bag of unshelled as well as a small pkg of shelled in my freezer along with the other nuts, seeds & dry food mix. They sit right along side the frozen veggies & fruit he won't eat, lol. I alternate the pine nuts with pecan & almond slivers on top of his dry food mix. I give him that early in the day so as not to spoil the dinner he won't eat. I found something in Pet Smart the other day he just loved... blueberry flavored dog biscuits. Who would have thought?? They're just the right size. Must have been really good cause there was nothing but a few crumbs left.

Pine Nuts: Yummy, but filling

Postby Joan » Wed Apr 18, 2007 12:19 pm

Pine Nuts: Yummy, but filling

From AOL, "Pine nuts contain the highest amount of protein of any nut or seed. They contain pinolenic acid, a naturally occurring polyunsaturated fat that actually stimulates two powerful hunger suppressing hormones (at least for humans). Both hormones play a major role in signaling to the brain that you're no longer hungry. In one study, participants consuming an extract of pinoleic acid reduced their food intake by 36 percent."

This is good to know. LOL I tend to have peanut butter to bring down my little bugger. Then what she eats I usually just buy on a need to get basis. I feel it'll be better for her. I also have a nut and berry novelty store by my house so I make a mix of my own to give Isobella. Expensive as all hell but atleast I know I have a place to rely on when I run out of anything she particularly likes!

I ordered and received these pine nuts and although they are large they aren't very tasty. Rockie's favorite is pine nuts but she'll pass on these most of the time.

Deb, Animal Medical Supply in Meridian usually has the pinenuts in stock and if not can order them, in shell. I also found the 2 ounce jars of shelled at Vowell's grocery store in Philadelphia.

Pine Nuts taste better if you clip off the end where they were attached and remove any “skin”. I use my thumb and fingernail and eat that part myself. It is often real bitter.

I bought them in the grocery store in the plastic clamshell container that holds 4 oz. The first ones were great! But I put them in small plastic bags for the refrigerator and threw away the container so I don't know what company distributed them.
The second ones were from Melissa's and most seem to be horrible. So bad that my next visit I bought ones distributed by Springwater Sprouts which are better but some are still sub-par. Amanda now takes a bite and then either demolishes or drops them.

Wonder if exposure to heat, etc. in a store makes them rancid/bitter?

I keep mine in a small air tight container .... the ones from the grocery store. In the shell, I keep in the air tight bag. I've not frozen nor refrigrated any.

I keep mine in a jar with a tight lid in the fridge. Every week or so, I taste one when I am giving them to the furballs. When the taste is not as fresh as it seemed the last time I checked, they go into our next salad or into a bird feeder outside

Nuts Online

Postby Cathy C. » Sun Apr 06, 2008 9:07 am

I never saw pine nuts in the shell until I looked at your all's links. I've been getting all my nuts from Nuts Online and get a pound bag without the shell for $12.99. I looked and see they have pine nuts in the shell for $6.99 a pound. My little Pootie loves them so much she gets so excited when she gets them. I'll have to try the ones in the shell. I love them too and eat a small handful daily. Living with a squirrel has gotten me hooked on nuts now. I make regular orders to Nuts Online.
