mealworms -- how many, how often?

Postby toiveajattelu » Sat Feb 14, 2009 2:06 am

Best-Friend tried mealworms for the first time today, and she's completely bonkers about them. She ate four in one sitting, and I got the feeling that she would have kept eating them as long as I kept replenishing her supply. Is there such a thing as too many mealworms, or can you keep a constant supply in the cage, like with Nut n Berry? I'm just not sure whether I should be imposing limits on how many she can eat.

When I buy a small container of meal worms, I dump it in a crock http://www.upco.com/quick-lock-crock-bowl-20-oz and they eat at their leisure. I also feed the worms and gut load them with calcium. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... catid=6461

Interesting...how do you feed that product to the mealworms?

Also, I notice from another thread that you've also used the Fluker's cubes...do you prefer the gel to the cubes?

I just dump some into the crock with the worms. I don't really have a preference ... whatever might be on sale at the pet store. I have the gel right now.

Joan, do you have a preference to where you get your mealworms. Everytime I look in the petstore, they smell and half are dead. I did get some for a bait shop one time, the small ones. But, I wasn't sure if that was a great idea. They where very healthy and lively.

I've been getting them at Petco, but it's the same. I just take the dead ones out and swap them for live ones in another carton ... that way, I get all live ones. When i buy in bulk, I like Grubco in Ohio: http://www.grubco.com/index.cfm

I get mine at Wild Birds Unlimited, and they are always top notch. I'm sure they are probably higher there - everything else is. But they usually cut me a deal, and they will order them in large amounts for me if I want. Last time I bought, she said that their supplier was closing for a while, so I bought double so I can raise my own for a while.

Just curious does it matter if the worms are alive? Or if they are the roasted dead kind? You know pre-cooked as I like to say.

I found that my pups like the roasted ones and the adults go for the live. I think the wiggling scared the pups.
