any preparation for an antler found in woods?

Postby spiritedaway20 » Thu Sep 05, 2013 1:43 am

It's a 7 point dropped or broken antler my boyfriends dad gave me (he is the one who found it). It has green stuff (moss...algae?)on it and it's softer than those antler dog chews they have. It looks like a wild squirrel has already nibbled some of it. Lol

Do I need to prepare it at all other than rinsing it off? Is soap and water a good idea and is it ok to use? Should i bake it to dry it out? It seems so porous. I'm used to the expensive crap in the pet stores. :/ I'm not a country gal....yet. it seems likeit'd be more delectible the way it is. Will the green stuff hurt them? I have pictures if need be.

I'd just use it as it is. Flyers know what to eat and what not. The moss may be something they want.(go ahead and post the pictures) If it's bad for them, they won't eat it. It's likely been nippled on my other calcium loving critters. I have learned to trust the flyer's innate instinct.

Thanks, Joan! I'll just give it to them. Do you think the green stuff was moss or algae? It has it on tje end too where it would have attatched to the skull.

Can't really tell, but don't worry ... they will know. That antler should last them a life time.
