Help! Has anyone ever heard of this??

Postby Lora » Tue Nov 11, 2008 6:52 pm

I'm having some medical problems that so far have stumped both my doctor & the various doctors who consulted when I spent 2 days in the hospital last month. I turned 49 years old last month and I'm about 150 lbs overweight. I have missed 3 periods & if I don't have one this month that will make 4. August was the first month I missed. July's was very light & I remember having some stomach distress prior to getting that one. After missing the one in August I woke up one morning feeling like I had literally swallowed a bowling ball. I told my husband it felt like I had gained 25 lbs. I had no way of really knowing as I cannot seem to find my scale. It's still packed away somewhere. I kept thinking if I could just start my period I would be ok. By the end of September I had missed my 2nd period & was really feeling horrible. I couldn't get in/out of the bed by myself, walk to the kitchen or even shower by myself without fear of falling. I'm only 5'2" so the excess weight I was feeling was just too much for my frame. I'm not one to run to the doctor but I finally admitted defeat & went the first week of October. Bloodwork showed a thyroid problem but I was in between hyper & hypo so they weren't sure what to do about it. My doctor wanted a CT Scan of my abdomen to rule out fluid build up indicating a possible heart condition. Here's where it gets interesting..... The scan showed nothing out of the ordinary except for 30-40 lbs of water around my abdomen! Not in my abdomen but just under the skin both above & on either side like a horse shoe. Well they'd never seen this before & suggested I stay there for a couple of days so they could monitor me on water pills. That was a big fiasco as every doctor that walked in my room had their own agenda & thought I was gonna be a willing guinea pig... WRONG!!! I've now been on water pills for 3 weeks, watching my diet, salt intake, etc w/o much improvement. My doctor took more blood for extensive testing on my thyroid & called me back today with the results. Everything is NORMAL! Tests indicate no thyroid problem at all. Now they want to send me to a gastro specialists. I'm at the end of my rope here. I can't afford to now bounce around from specialist to specialist but I don't want to be an invalid anymore either. I have felt from the beginning that I may be starting menopause. My body feels like it is all geared up for a period that never comes. I was willing to buy the thyroid issue as the symptoms match & a thyroid problem can cause you to miss periods. Now I don''t know what to think. The first 2 mos I also had insomnia which I'm happy to report has gone away since I stopped using Splenda. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this???? I could have an abdominal tap to remove the water (with a very big needle.... yuck) but w/o knowing why it's there who's to say it wouldn't come right back. If anyone has any ideas on what direction I might go in or any good home remedies to rid myelf of this water please let me know. I don't care how crazy it sounds. Sorry for the long post, it's been a long ordeal.

Are you taking vasopressin, nimodipine or isoprenaline?

No, I was not taking any meds when this started. The only thing I'm taking now is Lasix (water pill) & vitamin supplements for my low carb diet and FINALLY some pain meds for the back spasms I'm getting due to all the extra weight. Took me 6 weeks to pry those out of the doctor.

Chippy, I've tried several times to reply to your PM but the system is not cooperating. I've had both an ultrasound & a C-Scan, no tumor. Just 30 to 40 lbs of water sitting around my abdomen. My dr wants me to see a gastro dr next. After that I plan to see a gynecologist. My money's still on menopause complicated by weight & Splenda use. Doctors are really at a loss when dealing with overweight patients. The only reason I'm gonna see a gastro dr is because when I was in the hospital the gastro consulting dr was the only one who seemed to have a clue. They are familiar with overweight patients. I'm gonna try to see him if I can. Thanks for your reply. At this point I wish it was a tumor. At least then I'd have a game plan!
