need medical advice

Postby Petrie's mom » Thu Jun 12, 2014 11:44 am

We have a full grown make flyer that friends found on their driveway, not directly under a tree, but near trees as if he had fallen. He did not have strength in one hind leg but could hold himself upright. He consistently turned to the right in circles or spirals. He is very comfortable with humans as if raised as a pet. I suspected vitamin deficiency and have been giving him mega doses of calcuim/D3 in peanut butter when he was eating, and applesauce. He had a ravenous appetite at first but now is only taking liquids from a dropper: water and apple juice/water mix with vitamins. Several times we have thought he was dead, but he keeps rallying and will drink and move some. He wants to be on his back with head back and I suspect breathing is the reason but it does not seem ragged... He also is blind and has been the entire time. Please let me know if there is anything else we can do for the little guy. He is such a fighter and a lovable little one. Thanks- Genelle

Genelle, with the spirals it's possible he suffered some kind of head ingury. All you can do is make him comnfortable and see if he mends.

Please stop the vitamin D3 immediately!!!!! Vitamin D3 is a rodenticide, the major ingredient in rat killers. Supportive care is about all that can be done for him at this time, he may benefit from some Esbilac Puppy milk replacer for nutrients. Go to your local drugstore and ask for several one cc syringes. You can give him water/food with these. If he is unable to sit upright to eat you can feed him jarred baby foods thinned with water or formula. If he can sit and eat chopped veggies are excellent to give him. At this time no nuts or corn and limited seed. He will need strength to fight his way back. Squirrels in the wild eat very little nuts and no corn at all.
Keep us informed as to how he is doing.
