Water?

Postby violetlady » Mon Dec 07, 2009 9:28 am

I use a glass water bottle w/stainless tube & ball. Is it advisable to change the water daily in that situation?

It's advisable to check the ball daily as they can become stuck. I don't change water daily ... probably should.

We don't change water every day but skip a day. We use the type of water holders that are glass that are found in the bird section for seeds. I was always afraid that the babies would drown if I put out any other kind of water dish. We put the Avitron in the tube (2 drops) and they have gotten along great for 6 years. Don't use any thing else on their food but do have a cal stick for them to chew on wlhen they need to .
One thing to be careful about the glass tube is when your cleaning it be very careful because you can cut you finger really good if it brakes. Tom found out one Sun afternoon and had to go to the ER. He got glued back together. LOL
They also love the egg seed bird sticks but so does our bird. LOL
Good luck

Im not familiar with the cal-stick or egg seed stick. Where do you get them? The water bottle tube & ball is stainless, not glass & the glass bottle is mounted outside the cage with the stainless tube jutted through a wire opening. The glass bottle is really thick glass. I just figured the water in a glass bottle wouldn't become contaminated like an open water dish would, so I haven't been changing it everyday. Thought I'd throw out the question in case Im overlooking something.

I change the water every other day. Every time they drink, even from the type of feeder you're describing, a little bit of squirrel saliva, including all the concomitant bacteria, is deposited in the water. So it's not wise to go too long without changing the water, especially with a younger squirrel that has an immature immune system.

Our babies do not drink out of the adult water bottles. Not until they are about 4 months old. Our water bottles are always washed out every other day so there is't any problem with the flyers young or old.
