Girl Has Lost Her Mind

Postby Hope » Sat Mar 27, 2010 9:28 am

Hi Everyone,

Let me start by saying this website and all of you have been invaluable in helping me raise my girl Acorn. I got her last september when she was rescued from a dog. She was very small (eyes closed and almost no fur) and I hand raised her and continue to handle her daily - nightly. I always check on and give her a treat before I head out to work in the mornings but the last few days she hasn't been her usual self. Yesterday she nipped my finger then quickly took the treat and went into her box. This morning she took the treat then dropped it and attacked my hand and gave me a nasty bite. Afterward she proceeded to run around the cage then back to me to try and attack again. She has been fine at night, I'm just not sure about this morning thing. Does anyone know why she would do this? I love her but if she continues or gets worse I'm afraid she will become an outside squirrel. I am considering bringing her to work during the day to promote bonding. However, I don't think bonding is the issue because at night she loves to get her ears rubbed and chin scratched. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds hormonal; she's probably in estrus.

Yeah she's just going through her stage, you never really know how long it's going to last but it will stop. Just be patient she will stop just keep handling her if you can.

Ive also heard they can get cranky if you dont give them some alone time, but dont take my word for it, Im far from an expert on the subject!
Beautiful coloring on her though! Im sure everything will work out, this seems to be a common occurrence with these little guys.

Thanks guys. You are probably right about the hormones. I feel better about it, but my finger doesn't. Hopefully she will go back to her old self. I had originally planned to release her this spring but fell in love with her. I would hate to let her go (after some serious wild squirrel boot-camp training) but I don't want her to be unhappy either.

It's not that she's unhappy, my boy Taz is going through this, it's just not very bad but most cases sound allot like yours.

She got me good again this morning. Rotten critter. She was happily getting her cheek rubbed and suddenly snapped turning into a tasmanian devil. I really wish she would turn back into the cute baby she was.... any ideas on how to turn back time? The pic is of her last october.... she was so cute!
