Need HELP to teach my squirrel

Postby wulphjet » Tue Dec 16, 2008 1:58 pm

My squirrel is about 4months now and I do not think she is bonding with me well enough  , she bits and even gave me a war dance once. Masha doesn't like to be handled. What do I do? Also I bought her 2 different types of wheel but she would not use them and just goes crazy in her cage. I need Help!!!

Hmmm. I have a feeling that the operative word in your sentence might just be 'cage'. Even with a 'floor to ceiling' cage, Flyers need daily OOC time, imho. You may need to do some 'remedial' socialisation, with Masha. She might need to 'relearn' that you are her friend, her companion, and the one thing she can go to, when she feels either the need for fun, or the need for protection. Such remedial work is best done in a small room (the bathroom works well, in most cases), and when you've the time and patience to spend not less than an hour just sitting with her, letting her come to you in her own good time.

good luck bonding with masha. i think beverly has the best idea here... take it slow, but spend lots of time with her. shylo won't use a wheel either, btw... i've tried different types but she doesn't like them. not all flyers like wheels.

We have had flyers for over 8 years and all kinds of wheels. With 5 different flyers NOT one of them would ever touch a wheel except to sit on it and eat a nut. We have always given our flyers a LOTS of out of cage time and that is one reason they don't need a wheel. Also on the bonding you have to take each min by min and let your flyer COME to you . Let her know that your her friend and give her a reward when she does climb on your hand or arm with out you making her. It really does take a lot of time and being very still and talking very softly to them. '
Good luck and enjoy your true little friend. She is also training you . LOL
