Aspiration Pneumonia

Postby Joan » Wed Aug 24, 2005 4:56 pm

Formula fed pups are susceptible to aspirating formula which can lead to developing pneumonia. Esbilac formula does not need to be supplemented by also giving straight water to the pup.

Pups should NEVER be fed on their backs. See below for proper way to hold a pup during feeding:

A pup that develops aspiration pneumonia will usually die within 24 hours if untreated. The sooner treated, the better.

Symptoms of pneumonia - SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION:

Mouth Breathing/Gasping for Air/"Clicking" sound when breathing may indicate aspiration pneumonia.
