Thought I would update again. Penny's molt gone wild seems to finally be coming to a close. She's started getting new growth--gray fuzzies--and even some patches that have come back complete with gold tip like her original fur.

March 2--that brown spot on her neck had just grown in, along with gray fuzzies around it.

Still March 2--the back of her neck/head was one of the last places she lost fur. It got totally bald.

This is today, March 8--the bown spot on the back of her neck is significantly larger

Butt fuzzies are getting longer and some now have gold tips.

Now that's a molt! Really like the tail shot as a number of folks are getting just the tail and are worried something is wrong. I'm gonna most it separately too as a good example.

Hair loss on tail

Postby Joan » Sun Mar 08, 2009 8:42 pm

This is a great shot of molt on a tail. Some flyers get only fur loss like this on the tail and their HOFs are worried sick something is wrong.
This is Ardilla's Penny:

I'm just so relieved it's finally been filling in the past week or two. I thought she might go totally bald. LOL And Judy's been nice enough to keep an eye on it and let me know she's going to be OK.

Here's how it looks today, March 20

Image

The neck area has filled in very quickly. The gray fuzzy areas are making progress, but much more slowly.

Continuing the chronicle of Penny's extreme molt...

Here's today, March 27

The new fur is very soft, glossy, and dense compared to the "full" areas that are lef tof her old fur.

Image

I'm pointing to an area of shorter new fur. There's also a grayish edge of very short new growth that is just starting to come in.

Image

Still just gray fuzzies on he rrump, but they seem denser and slightly longer.

Some new fur on her tail

It may in lack of trace element zinc, so you can change diet for it. If it won't help, you can just take it easy since we have no cheap hair wigs for squirrel.

It is just her molting. She looses fur on her tail every year, but it grows back. She is doing very well. I actually have 5 flyers now! lol
