Glad to have found all of you! Need some expert advice

Postby ocanada65 » Mon Oct 13, 2014 11:07 pm

Hi Everyone! I am glad to have found a group we can refer to with our flyer.

His name is Mort and he is approx. 9 months old.

We love him very much and but sadden by the fact, the woman who sold him to us, lied about his age.
We feel he is older then she told us he was and the bonding is going very slow. We are determined
to get him to bond to us even in light of this. We would never think of getting rid of him because:

1) we love him too much (even though he is nervous around us- but it is getting a wee bit better)
2) we are not the type of people who give their hearts away to an animal and then rehome them because it might be
a bit tough or a long process

Any advice or tip anyone could provide would be so greatly appreciated.
I do not know if getting a second flyer is the correct course to take at this time.
Thank you all in advance for any and all replies.

Patience is key. How much does he weigh? That will give a good indicator as to how old he is. I got my Daisy when she was two years old, and it took a lot of patience to get her to bond. I would put her in my sports bra every day after work and carry her around until bedtime (or until she ran and played). I would shut myself up in the bathroom with nothing but me and her and read a book (or played on my ipad). I'd put a water bowl and some healthy snacks around too. She got curious and began poking around. Eventually she came to love me.

Good luck, keep trying, don't give up!

I do not know how much he weighs. I know he has grown since we got him, I would say almost doubled in size.

How would I go about getting a weight on him?

Place his pouch on scale and then add him into the pouch and take another weight?

I figured it would be just patience and time. Thank you for sharing your experience with us,

I know that in time he will come around! :)

I got a food scale...and I put them on it with a bit of nut or some peanut butter on my finger. That keeps them still enough for me to get a measurement. But since he is timid, yes your method would absolutely work fine. Here's a rundown (not exact):
A new born Flyer weighs 3 grams
4 days ---- 5g
7 days ---- 7g
9 days ---- 7-8g
12 days -- 10-11g
14 days -- 11-13g
17 days -- 12-13g
19 days -- 15-16g
21 days -- 16-19g
28 days -- eyes open
30 days -- 25-26g
31 days -- 27-28g
35 days -- 30-31g
38 days -- 32-34g
41 days -- 34-37g
50 days -- 41-52g (note the large variation now)
52 days -- 43-53g

73 grams is 2.57 ounces. Adult flyers in the wild weigh 2-4 oz with 4 being really big.

Flyers are considered adult at 12 weeks although many males cannot breed until a year or more. If his testicles are descended, he's of breeding age. Skirkpatrick74's advice about patience is correct ... it takes time.

Just don't try to pull off any cotton balls as one HOF tried. LOL The testicles are not descended year around, but if he's "scrotal", you can't miss it.

]Newbie, Found 3 brothers that fell out of a tree. Unfortunately 2 of the boys didn’t survive. We are now caring for this sweet little guy. He weighs 15g. I thought his eyes were open already but they are not as wide as the pictures that I’ve seen. He is eating 1cc of formula about 4 times a day. He is still very wobbly but loves to snuggle!!! Any advice would be appreciated.
