Marilyn- i am so sorry to read all of this- how traumatic for you- I never heard of flying squirrels eating their young- maybe something was wrong with both of them?

i have a small padlock on my cage- most of the time, it is unlocked but just secures the cage door- when children are around, i lock it and hide the key- the kids are curious, and are not going to break into the cage to get inside, but they will get in if they can- i am sure your flyer will be fine-...

i am so sorry he didnt make it- he had the best chance with you- he must have suffered too much injury before you got him- you cant save all of them, but you save almost all-

i discovered an oak tree (with acorns) i hadnt seen before- sawtooth oak- i took the acorn in its furry shell to my gardening friend for identification- we had to consult the big book and found it- i have lived here all my life, and never noticed that type of oak- duh-

how do flyers communicate with each other ? have there been any studies done on what the chirping actually means- mine chirps a lot, but there doesnt seem to be any consistent reason for it- is it an alarm?? "help, help- my squammy is putting vitamins in my water!!"

i live in a suburb neighborhood too, but there are a lot of large trees- it is an older neighborhood, there is no reason there should not be flyers- i grew up in the country and we found a couple of flyers, so i know we had them- we used to go out in the evening and look for them- and never saw them...

thanks- i will try that tonight- I am hoping that Spinner has gotten with some wild flyers, havent seen any in my neighborhood, but there isnt any reason they wouldnt be there- this is a perfect environment, (except for the obvious signs of humans, cars, noise, dogs, etc- doesnt seem to bother anyth...
