Scalisti is Gone

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that Scalisti passed away. I have had him for over 14 years. I do plan on getting a new male flyer who can fill in the void in my heart but won't be a replacement for him. Even a son of Scalisti wouldn't have been a replacement, even though I sometimes regret...

Update on Scalisti

As some of you know, my ancient (14 yrs.) male flyer had a foot injury last month, losing all his left toes. He had a vet visit a few days ago to make sure he's healing properly. Right now, he's on pain meds and antibiotics.

Scalisti Foot Injury

This might be life threatening. Scalisti, my 14 year old male flyer, got some thread tangled on his foot, which I removed. The foot looks swollen and there's lint on it that is hard to remove. The nearest vet that treats flyers is about 45 minutes away from me, and I lack transportation at the momen...

Scalisti is still doing fine :)

Sorry I haven't posted in about a year, but Scalisti (a.k.a. Grampa Squirrel) is still alive and kicking at about 14 years old. Here's a little catch up on him in the past year: Shortly after Orchid passed away, I noticed that Scalisti seemed depressed, and was calling for and looking around for his...

Scalisti doing fine

Just wanted to let you all know Scalisti is doing fine. He's taking his new diet pretty well. A few weeks ago I admit I was a little too hasty when I wanted help getting him a new companion. But as soon as I get my tax return I will be able to afford a new companion for Scalisti.

Re: Scalisti to Vet... Need transportation ASAP

I had just completed a video of Scalisti so that you all can see how he's doing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoAnx6xoDJg I went to go the store and got collard greens, bok choy, and plain yogurt. I dipped the vegetables in yogurt and put it on his dish. He is taking it pretty well, so I'll keep e...

Re: Scalisti to Vet... Need transportation ASAP

Scalisti seems to be doing better than I thought he was, but I still want to give him extra care due to his age. I made some videos of him, which I'll post here when they're ready.

Scalisti to Vet... Need transportation ASAP

Last night, Scalisti seemed disoriented when waking up for his nightly meal. I am really concerned, because I had already lost Orchid and my ground squirrel Ariel to something I haven't yet been able to explain. Some say it is diet, but I'm thinking it is a pathogen that was in some hamsters I had. ...

Re: Orchid

I think there may be an epidemic of some kind. My ground squirrel Ariel just passed away. Ariel lived with my prairie dog Mancha and my other ground squirrel Fenwick. Orchid lived with Scalisti. But all of them lived in the same room. I had gotten hamsters a couple months ago. I am under suspicion t...

Re: Orchid

Thanks for all the kind words. I will miss Orchid, and when spring comes, I'll probably plant the flower of her namesake at her grave.

Meanwhile, I don't want Scalisti to be lonesome, so I'll be looking for another flyer to keep him company.

I am seriously considering purchasing a new flyer or two from either Helen's Little Critters in San Antonio, or S&S Exotic Animals in Houston. I live in the Dallas area. I would like to know if there is anyone here living in either San Antonio or Houston that can pick up a flyer for me at either...

I haven't posted here in probably a couple of years. I have a sad announcement to make. Orchid passed to the rainbow bridge 2 days ago. She was about 10 and a half years old. As you all know, Scalisti is 10 years old and is very special to me because he's my first pet squirrel. I want to try to breed again in order to continue his legacy. To increase the chances Scalisti will be a dad again, I would need more girls. Neither Rakita nor Orchid were successful last year, bu...

Tiny Bump on Scalisti

There is a tiny bump in the skin on Scalisti's back. I'm not sure what it is, but it is quite similar to the bump that started on Rikki, my late Richardson ground squirrel (1998-2001). The lump on Rikki turned out to be carcinoma, and she had to be put to sleep after it grew so big it was almost str...

On November 15 (which is the date that the breeder told me more than 8 years ago when I got Scalisti), Scalisti turned 9 years old. Nine years for a captive flyer is approximately 58 people years. Vanilla moves about the same, and is using her back legs minimally.

There is also some hairloss on Vanilla's side, but no rash. I think it might be genetic, because Scalisti had some hairloss when he was young.

I'm not entirely sure that having no babies this summer had much to do with Scalisti, because Caramel was involved in the matings as well.
