What kind of nuts is he chewing? Our flyers used to keep their teeth trimmed opening hazel and hickory nuts.

Rest in peace Bexley
Our second flyer Bexley passed away this evening. He had his 15th birthday this last summer. Since Beacon's passing last year he's been our only flyer. Both Beacon and Bexley eventually went blind and stopped flying, but I loved to spend time with them. The sound of them gnawing on nuts late at the ...

Rest in peace Beacon
Long ago I adopted a flying squirrel from Helen's Little Critters. Not being close enough to pick him up I had to have the little guy flown in from Texas. When I first opened the crate at the airport to check on the tiny occupant, a little ball of fur with huge eyes stared back at me. His soul shine...

Senior Flyer questions
Hi all, It's been many years since I'd been here. My flyers Beacon and Bexley are getting quite old at 13 and 12 years respectively. Beacon has gone blind and Bexley mostly blind. They don't come out much or for very long these days, but still like to scurry around the curtains from time to time. I ...

Re: Cataracts?
Hi all, just got back from the vet. Turns Bexleys suffering from lenticular sclerosis, not an infection or cataracts at this time. Dr Todd noted that his vision will be hazy, and depending if it progresses to both eyes he may go blind in time. Thanks everyone for the responses, this forum is a life ...

Re: Cataracts?
Thanks Joan and Peep for getting back to me.
Peep -- Do you know quickly a possible fungal infection can cause harm? (Not that I'm willing to risk Bexley's health at all!) I'm currently in a flyer unfriendly state and will need to make arraingments to get to a vet that would be safe to see him.

Hi all, It's been a few years since I'd been on the boards. Last night while letting our flyers (Beacon and Bexley) out to run around I thought the light reflected weirdly from Bexley's left eye. I tried to catch up with the little booger to check, but he was chasing Beacon around the cloths hanging...

Super sleepy squirrls
Hi all, It's been awhile since I'd posted here. I did a few searches about the forum but didn't find any previous posts for super sleepy squirrels. I've got two male flyers (Beacon, 6 yrs old, and Bexley 5 years old). This summer they have been sleeping alot. And by alot, I mean >alot<. My wife and ...

I believe for sure it's the way squirrels determine who is in charge. We have to males that chase each other around and attempt to bear hug each other as well. John C captured this behaviour in wild squirrels with his (unfortuanly now defunked) squirrel cams: http://www.wap.atfreeweb.com/flyingsquir...

Twirl a squirrel
Saw this on YouTube. It's a bird feeder that spins squirrels off. I usually have the other problem... pesky birds getting into my squirrel feeders.
The vid made me laugh... the shot of the dizzy squirrel was kinda funny to.

Re: Questions on Carrying Squirrels
(1) Do they frequently pee/poop on you, and what do you do to avoid or minimize that? Leigh Ann Mine will tend to pee on me when they wake up. Especially when I have them on me for a long time (2-4 hours). I tend to put on an old tshirt tucked into my pants (known in our house as the "squirrel...

Yep.. industrious little furballs. They just can resist hiding nuts when the seasons change. I find them in everything and everywhere. I just found a bunch in my winter coat this morning. Someone must have hid it last year before I put it away. Nothing like getting to work and digging around for a b...

I agree with Lora. It's most likely the changing seasons. Once spring comes, they should return to normal. Of our two flyers, Bexley goes INSANE with the nut stashing/hiding when the fall comes around. I've gotten used to it, and now play games with him. I'll jiggle a couple of nuts in my hand getti...
