This is by far the most detailed and complexed book out there on flying squirrels. It took me a long time to find a copy but it was well worth the struggle to find it. A must read for any HOF

Just keep watching -- it will probably show up on eBay eventually. You can put a flag on the book and eBay will notify you when it comes up for auction. I got my copy at a library book sale for $1.00. Of course, I happen to like books, so I go to a lot of the book sales and buy way more than I should. I've picked up a lot of great books that way. If you have the time and the interest, hit all the sales you can. There is a free website that will notify you of any sales in your area. I'll look it up and post it.

Flying Squirrels of the World is not a book I've been able to find, at all. I did indeed 'see' it once, in a photo posted on a flyer forum by a fellow from Michigan, or Minnesota, or somewhere, named Jeremy V(something or other - I don't remember - Italian sounding ...). Jeremy had a photo of one of his flyers (Elvis? I'm not sure ...) sitting on a stack of flyer books, and the top book was 'Flying Squirrels of the World'. I researched it as far as I could - even with the Library of Congress - and with a British book agent - but could not find it - or find even the author (Carolyn something-or-other ...) or ID the publisher by the logo on the book's cover (a stylised scene of a pine tree and a curving trail leading from the foreground to the horizon). Sigh. Jeremy V. was unwilling to share info about the book with me. I seem to recall him saying something about it being a 'prototype', and not actually printed in a 'normal' run - but who knows. Jeremy is quite knowledgeable, about flyers, as an amature naturalist. Jeremy's wife, Angela, has a wonderful hand-crafted jewelry site on line, Wild Thing Designs that includes many fine photos of flying squirrels.

What I do have is a webpage as part of The Den Drey at Phantom Farm that is titled Flying Squirrels Around the World, with some photos and drawings of various flying squirrel species.

As to books, I just got two 'new' squirrel books, Fluttertail and Feathertail (Carlton Press, NY 1977), a semi-fictional juvenile book about the 'wild' flying squirrels known to the author, Dwight E. Sollberger; and Squirrels,(Four Winds Press - Scholastic Mag., Inc, NY 1975), a nonfiction juvenile book with a chapter on flying squirrels, by George Laycock. My all time favourite fiction, on flyers, is Hide and Go Seek, by Dorothy Lathrop. Long out of print, it can be found for purchase at Advanced Book Exchange (aka ABEbooks), and is a wonderful addition to any flyer library.

Non-Fiction:

Whispers of the Wilderness, by H. Mortimer Batten, with pen and ink illustrations by Kay Nixon Published by Blackie & Sons, Ltd., London & Glasgow, © 1960 by the executors of the late H. Mortimer Batten. Mine is ex-lib St. James-Assiniboia Public Library, Winnapeg, Manitoba, Canada. Twelve chapeter on wildlife in the Canadian woods, and my favourite of course about flying squirrels (likely the Northern Glaucomys sabrinus)

Two copies of virtually the same book, Animals,1926, from 'The Nature Library' (illustrated in colour by McGinn)and The Book of Animals, aka 'Animals Worth Knowing, 1934,(illustrated with both B&W and colour-tinted photographs)'Little Nature Library', by Earnest T. Seton both published by Doubleday, Garden City, NY. Only a short chapter on flyers, but Seton is always a good choice.

A Pet Book for Boys and Girls, Alfred Morgan, illustrated B&W pencil sketches and pen & ink drawings by the author and Ruth King, © 1951 by Alfred Morgan, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, NY. Again, just a chapter, but delightful.

Here Come the Squirrels, Alice E. Goudey, illustrated by Garry MacKenzie, © 1962 by author and by illustrator. A juvenile book, with just a one page description & illustration of flying squirrels, but happily flyers decorate the frontpiece page, too.

Fiction:

The Miss Liberty Caper, by Susan Saunders, illustrated with pen & ink by Alex Bloch, © 1986, Bantam-Skylark Books; a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book, in which, by following different numbered choices of 'what happens next', a number of different stories, each with a different conclusion, but the same basic elements (you, your pet flying squirrel, and a field trip to the Statue of Liberty in NY Harbour), unfolds. Good clean fun!

I highly recommend any and all of these as additions to a flyer based library!

I bought a copy of A Flying Squirrel at Acorn’s Place from Ebay a couple of months ago. What a fantastic little book. The artwork in it is just beautiful. It is now one of my “coffee table” books.

hey guys. every now and then i go on amazon and search flying squirrel books. I just found something I've never seen before. "Brave Jack: The flying squirrel Episode 1: The Legend of How Flying Squirrels Came to Be". I'm really intrigued by this book. You guys should all go check it out. LOL its by "Uncle Fez". It looks like it woudl be really funny....and there's more than one "episode".

For those who read "There's A Flying Squirrel in My Coffee: Overcoming Cancer With the Help of My Pet,"...what did you think of it? I had been debating getting it.

Greetings, SciontChic87 - I read, and have a copy, of 'There's A Flying Squirrel in My Coffee' - it was an enjoyable read, particularly when Bill Goss is describing Rocky. The tale is mostly inspirational fluff, but now and then it's good to read inspirational stuff!

I just finished reading it and will post more later. It's obvious the author is not a HOF and got most of his information from the Internet. There are a number of ill advised suggestions. Book is almost too inclusive as it covers many species, but this can be for international info. I have no idea how correct the info is as I know nothing about these flyers, but I do question a "pigmy" flyer that weighs 6 oz. LOL The author and publisher are British and there is a strong disclaimer at the beginning. I will report more later. I just gave it to a non HOF friend to read so I can see what kind of questions she has. She's interested in getting a flyer and has experience with my Chuck ... including getting bitten; so she will ask good questions about what's in the book.
